Gundlach Bundschu Winery, Sonoma valley

2000 Denmark Street, Sonoma, California

Description

Gundlach Bundschu Winery is located in Sonoma Valley and is one of California's oldest wineries, it is currently run by the 6th generation of the founder's heirs. They specialize in Gewurztraminer, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay varietals. The winery offers various tastings and tours options. The one reviewed here is the 'Rhinefarm Experience' that lasts about 90mins and takes place on the courtyard with a flight of 5-7 wines with description / info provided by one of the staffs. Optional snack add-ons are available.

Access & Transport

The winery is about 5km east of the town of Sonoma, 1km off Denmark St. Directions: https://www.gunbun.com/map-directions/

Instructions & Recommendations

Reservations are required and no outside food or picnics are allowed. Anyone under 21 years of age visiting the winery must be accompanied by an adult. For tours, the min. age is 12 years old and non-drinkers will be charged a 50% fee (as spaces are limited).

Meta review

This is one of the best-known wineries in Sonoma and whilst online reviews appear to be good overall, they are actually nuanced. Many visitors felt it was crowded, too commercial with waiting time and little staff attention, and good but unremarkable wines compared to other venues in the area. However, longer tours with visit of the cave and more explanations seem to draw much better reviews.

Environmental & Social

Impressive sustainability credentials, in terms of organic/ecosystem as well as energy efficiency and cleanliness. Info here: https://www.gunbun.com/sustainability/ We deem this activity socially neutral (alcohol Vs terroir / love of the land)

Conclusion

One of California's oldest wineries with an inviting set up and decently priced wine tastings (for the region at least). Wine connoisseurs may prefer a more intimate setting but this is a great choice for groups with snack / lunch options as well as more comprehensive tours of the cave and estate.
