Description
The Crocker Art Museum collection contains American works dating from the mid-19th century (the Gold Rush period) as well as some old masters drawings, European paintings, Asian, African and Oceanic art, and ceramic pieces from around the world. It was founded in 1885, making it the oldest art museum west of the Mississippi River. The museum is housed in an art gallery building designed in Italian style that was dramatically expanded in 2010 with the interconnected modern Teel Family Pavilion designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates Architects.
Access & Transport
The Crocker is located at 216 O Street in downtown Sacramento. Exit 518 of the I-5 is very close to the museum and parking is available within walking distance. The '8th & O streets' (Blue, Gold, Green) light rail station is 1km / 12mins walk away. Accessibility info: https://www.crockerart.org/visit/accessibility
Instructions & Recommendations
Docent-guided tours in a limited number of languages are available. Check the calendar for regularly scheduled tours or reach out at least four weeks in advance to inquire about additional tour scheduling. Email education@crockerart.org.
Environmental & Social
No info on building sustainability so we deem this marginally negative (electricity mostly). Helps spread culture and the arts + some educational programs and artist studios.
Conclusion
The Crocker is Sacramento's best cultural activity in our opinion, unless art really isn't your thing. Actually worth a detour if you are in the Northern Bay area.
