Description
La Alberca is a medieval village in the south of Salamanca province, in the Comarca of Sierra de Francia. It has a National Historic Heritage status on the back of its traditional architecture characterized by the use of stone and exposed wooden beams. Highlights include the old houses and narrow streets, the main square surrounded by columned porches, and the parish church of La Asunción.
Access & Transport
The village is 75km southwest of Salamanca (CL-512 / SA-210 then SA-201 at Tamames). It is 44km east of Ciudad Rodrigo and 75km north of Plasencia (in Caceres Province). There are several car parks just outside the centre of the village.
Instructions & Recommendations
This can be a good option on a regional road trip, on the way between Salamanca and Plasencia (impressive cathedral) or Caceres.
Environmental & Social
The main attractions in the village have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local rural economy even though there are some drawbacks to over-commercialization
Conclusion
The village of La Alberca is definitely one of the prettiest within the province of Salamanca and possibly of Castilla y Leon. However, it does take a while to get there and it is unlikely you will be on your own to explore the place... so if you are looking for authentic, that ship may have sailed.
