Description

California Citrus State Historic Park is an open-air museum sharing the story of the citrus industry's role in the history and development of Southern California, including the large population of migrant and immigrant workers, with a special place for the Navel orange from Riverside, which is where the orange industry started in the area in 1873. There are groves of citrus orchards and a museum with original citrus grove farm equipment.

Instructions & Recommendations

The Visitor Center/Museum is open Fri-Sun from 10h00 to 16h00. On those days there are 45mins interpretive tours starting at 11h00 and 14h00, weather permitting. No pre-registration is needed to join the tour unless your tour group is 8 or more people

Meta review

Visitors seem very satisfied with their experience, nothing exceptional but the walk in the citrus orchards is enjoyable (including the smell and tempting fruits) and informative if you happen to be on one of the tours. Try to schedule your visit on a day when the museum is open even though comments about it are average. Tips: wear walking shoes as most of the trails are dirt and bring some water and a hat/cap.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and helps preserve the cultural heritage of the area

Conclusion

Interesting to learn more about one aspect of California's economic rise - no gold rush mythology and 'glamour' but fundamental nonetheless. A good half-day trip from L.A. or stop between Joshua Tree NP and L.A.

Key positive

Educational and pleasant walk in the orchards

Cheap entrance /parking fee

Key negative

Museum needs a bit more investment
