Torrey Pines State Reserve

12600 North Torrey Pines Road, San Diego, California

Description

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is a coastal park in the northern part of La Jolla area in San Diego, California. It consists of a plateau with cliffs, 13km of hiking trails that overlook Torrey Pines State Beach and a lagoon that is the habitat of many migratory birds. South of the rock is Black's Beach, San Diego's unofficial nude beach. This park is the last known location where the Torrey pine (Pinus torreyana) still grows.

Access & Transport

The reserve is just west of the I-5, in the north of San Diego. From the north exit 33 on Carmel Valley Road and from the south exit 29 on Genesee Ave. Accessibility info: http://access.parks.ca.gov/parkinfo.asp?park=256&type=0

Instructions & Recommendations

No dogs allowed in the reserve or the state beach. If you do see a rattlesnake while hiking, stop and wait until the snake leaves the area.

Meta review

Excellent online reviews, the highlights being the great views over the ocean from the clifftops and the multiple trails, the Guy Fleming Trail in particular is mentioned regularly. A few comments about it being a little busy on weekends and a few visitors who think it is nice but not more spectacular than other parts of the La Jolla coastline. Tip: hikes range from easy walking to some difficult terrain so make sure you have proper footwear.

Environmental & Social

Green activity although there is quite a lot of road infrastructure. The reserve has, like is name suggests, a conservation mission

Conclusion

If you are looking for a relatively untouched environment and some fresh air within the limits of the city, this is easily one of the best options. Sunsets anyone?
