LGBTQ Castro walking tour - by Management
Description
The Castro is a neighbourhood in San Francisco known as a prominent symbol of LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other gender identity) activism in the country - so expect to see a lot of six-band rainbow flag. Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, lived in the neighbourhood until his assassination in 1978. Cruisin' the Castro is an operator offering walking tours of the area, including the 'LGBTQ Castro Tour' reviewed here that takes customers on a 2h walk through the history and significant places of the fight for LGBTQ civil rights in the USA.
Access & Transport
Tours meet at the Rainbow Flagpole Landmark at the corner of Castro & Market Streets near 400 Castro Street. Just look up for the big flag The meeting location is located above the Castro MUNI underground rail station and across from the "F" Line streetcar and several other bus lines
Instructions & Recommendations
Please note that the tour includes adult situations and sexual content. Parental discretion is advised.
Environmental & Social
High mark on the social (educational & diversity) aspect. No carbon footprint
Conclusion
A good tour to take, provided you have the budget, are not very fluent (or up to date) with the LGBT+ culture and have not explored the Castro on your own before, otherwise you won't discover much outside of Harvey Milk story.
Key positive
This is THE place to learn about the American LGBT+ movement
Good and engaging guide
Key negative
A little expensive
Suitability
Children can attend but we would think teenagers and older is more appropriate (if at least to understand what sexual orientation feels like).
