Twin Peaks & Mount Sutro hike

501 Twin Peaks Boulevard, San Francisco, California

Description

Mount Sutro and Twin Peaks are hills in the center of San Francisco, both culminating around 280m. Mount Sutro is forested, mainly with eucalyptus trees introduced in the late 19th century. There are several trails in the area, the one reviewed here is a 7.1km loop with total elevation gain of 300m on a non-technical dirt track, making it appropriate for beginners / families with a standard level of fitness and no prior trekking experience.

Access & Transport

The easiest place to start from is the parking at 'Christmas Tree Point rd', just off Twin Peaks Blvd. The closest bus stop is 'Parkridge Dr & Crestline Dr' (37) and the nearest light rail station is 'Castro' (KT, M), about 2km away.

Instructions & Recommendations

Make sure to bring proper footwear, some water and sun protection

Meta review

This is possibly SF's most popular urban hike and, although there are some street sections and stairs, a large part is in a forest area - a real luxury as acknowledged by many reviewers. The excellent views also get mentioned consistently.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Good environment for residents

Conclusion

The Twin Peaks & Mount Sutro loop hike is beginner-friendly but enjoyable by all. One of the best options in San Francisco for outdoor enthusiasts alongside Golden Gate Park and Presidio, but this feels different from those city parks.
