de Young museum, San Francisco

50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive, San Francisco, California

Description

The de Young Museum is a fine arts museum located in the Golden Gate Park in western San Francisco. Collections are quite varied and include a) American art from the 17th - 21st centuries with paintings sculptures and decorative arts items; b) international contemporary art; c) art from Africa, Pacific and the Americas; and d) textiles and costumes from around the world. The building was designed by architect firms Herzog & de Meuron and Fong + Chan. It includes a 44m observation tower (one can view as far as the Golden Gate bridge and the Marin Headlands) and the exterior is entirely clad with copper which will eventually oxidize and take a greenish tone thus blending with the surrounding environment.

Meta review

The museum is one of the best rated in the city and regularly listed in travel magazines with an emphasis on the building architecture. For many visitors it indeed seems to be one of the draws alongside the views from the tower, and whilst they enjoy a solid but unspectacular 18-19th range of American and European art, the contemporary art collection gets mixed reviews - as one would expect. A lot of positive comments about the temporary exhibition from art fans, except for the additional cost.

Environmental & Social

The building has green credentials (canopy, reduced cooling load, etc.) and the Fine Arts Museum publish its data online. Helps spreads the arts.

Conclusion

The de Young Museum houses extensive collections spanning different art types, medium and period. Whilst few of the items would be dubbed masterpieces, we think it is one of the best cultural activities in San Francisco for residents and tourists alike.
