Description
The beach of La Concha is a defining feature of San Sebastian and, with its promenade, it helped make the city fashionable as a seaside resort in the late 19th century. The beach is 1.3km long and remarkable for its regular shape. The sandy area available to bathers varies significantly depending on the tide.
Access & Transport
La Concha is on the western side of San Sebastian, only 5-10mins walk from the historical centre and from the main train station. The city is quite easy to get to by car from Bilbao or France (only 20km across the border). The nearest airport bears the name of the city but is actually next to Irun, at the French border, just across Hendaye. The next closest is Bilbao.
Instructions & Recommendations
Attractions close to the beach and the promenade include the old town and the Buen Pastor Cathedral on the eastern side and the Funicular Monte Igueldo (with excellent panoramic views of the city) just past the Ondarreta beach on the western side.
Environmental & Social
No carbon footprint linked to this activity. Some economic benefits to the local community but San Sebastian has become perhaps too trendy again, leading to some increased commercialization.
Conclusion
This iconic beach is part and parcel of the San Sebastian experience, not a must swim but a must see. Museum in the morning, beach in the afternoon and tapas bars in the evening!
