San Sebastian Pintxos & Wine by Devour Tours

Ijentea Kalea, Donostia, Euskadi

Description

Devour Tours operates 3h Pintxos & Wine walking tours of San Sebastian old town neighbourhood, taking up to 8 visitors with an English-speaking guide across some of the most traditional and best pintxos bars whilst learning about Basque cuisine and how to pour the regional cider. Customers will visit a local shop specialized in cured ham and move from one bar to the next whilst trying out pintxos and drink specialties - expect 5 drinks (cider, white wine, red wine, sweet wine) and 8 food items (including dessert) per person.

Access & Transport

The meeting point is at Goikoa Palace (#6 Ijentea Kalea), just behind the City Hall It is a short (5-10mins) walk from the main train station. The city is quite easy to get to by car from Bilbao or France (only 20km across the border) but, unless you do not drink, you will not be in a state to drive afterwards.

Instructions & Recommendations

Take note that the tour is not open to children under 12 years old, those with celiac disease and is not recommended for vegans. Modifications can be made for non-alcohol drinkers, vegetarians and those with gluten intolerance.

Meta review

One of the best ranked tours in the city but also the region on online portals. Reviews are unanimous in describing the guides as professional, knowledgeable, fun and engaging. The choice, quality and variety of food also consistently draws positive feedback. There is no recurring negative comment other than the price being on the high side

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral. Helps promote small independent operators with a strong connection to their neighbourhood and city

Conclusion

This is a top-notch small group experience, but the budget is significant so for most people the independent pintxos route is probably preferable (acknowledging that it won't come with the same insights). Best for those with a super flexible budget or those who feel intimated doing it "solo".

Key positive

An enjoyable way to meet people and discover the local cuisine

Engaging guides and small-size groups

Key negative

Very expensive (and amount of food & drinks included have reduced in the past few years)

Suitability

Not recommended for those under 16-18, vegetarians and those not drinking alcohol (can be done but not quite the same experience).
