Description
Santander Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Santander) was built between the 12th and 14th century atop a former Abbey so it has two overlapping floors: the main nave and the lower church or crypt. The dominant style is Gothic, including the cloister, but later additions (mostly new chapels) have some clear Baroque designs.
Access & Transport
The church is in the centre of Santander, a short walk from the bus and train stations. Santander is 100km from Bilbao along the Cantabrian Sea.
Instructions & Recommendations
Other sights nearby include the Plaza Porticada and the Plaza Pombo.
Environmental & Social
We deem this activity environmental neutral. Helps preserve the city's architectural heritage
Conclusion
One of the most compelling buildings in Santander but the interior is underwhelming by Spanish cathedral standards. At the same time the entrance is almost free so worth checking out if you happen to be around.
Key positive
Photogenic exterior
Interesting lower church concept
Key negative
Interior is somewhat unimpressive
Suitability
Mostly accessible but unclear if that includes the lower church
