Description
The Museum of the Galician People (Museo do Pobo Galego) documents and exhibits the Galician traditions and customs. It is housed in the old convent of Santo Domingo de Bonaval, in the town of Santiago de Compostela and comprises 9 rooms with different themes such as the sea, the countryside or clothing. Architecturally, the highlight is the triple helix staircase.
Access & Transport
The museum is 500m from the Cathedral and 1.5km north of the train station. It is 70km to A Coruña on the AP-9 or 30mins by train. Porto is 230km away, across the Portuguese border.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with either the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela or the Monasterio de San Martín Pinario
Environmental & Social
Repurposing of an existing building and low carbon footprint. Part of the city's architectural and the region's cultural heritages
Conclusion
Had there been more historical narrative, including a background about the origins of the Galician people, we feel this would have resulted in a much more comprehensive and educational experience. To be included if you have spare time in town but not a must see by any means.
Key positive
Striking triple helix staircase
Key negative
No standout items inside
