Breitachklamm

47 Klammstraße, Oberstdorf, Bayern

Description

The Breitachklamm is a gorge created by the Breitach river in Bavaria's Allgäu region. It is 2.5km long and, in place, 150m deep, making it the deepest rocky gorge in Central Europe. Due to the narrow path, a one-way trafic is implemented with a return leg through a different route. It is possible to continue on into the upper gorge for about 20mins, crossing the German-Austrian border in the process, and come back the opposite way (2-way traffic is authorized on the "blue route"). More info here: https://www.breitachklamm.com/jahreszeiten/routen-sommer.html

Access & Transport

The gorge is near the village of Oberstdorf, 170km southwest of Munich (2h20 drive). There are some regional trains connecting this village (also a ski resort) with Munich Central Station in 2h30m. The main parking (P1) is in Tiefenbach and the second option is to park at Walserschanz (longer route).

Instructions & Recommendations

The gorge can be closed at any time due to weather or other events so make sure you check the status on the website before heading there. It is also closed in autumn and the beginning of spring when the snow melts.

Meta review

Online reviews consistently highlight the wonderful and impressive scenery, may be even more so in the winter with frozen waterfalls and large icicles. The numbers of stairs on the route and need for shoes with proper grip is also mentioned regularly with a few visitors even thinking that this activity required a decent level of fitness whilst other rate it as very family friendly. It is recommended to come early to enjoy the site without the crowds.

Environmental & Social

Eco-friendly activity. Socially marginally positive as it brings some revenues to the local community.

Conclusion

The Breitach Gorges are a natural wonder that we highly recommend to those in Southwestern Bavaria and, for outdoor enthusiasts, they warrant a trip from as far as Munich or Stuttgart.
