Royal Palace of Riofrío

SG-V-7210, Segovia, Castilla y León

Description

The Royal Palace of Riofrío is one of the residences of the Spanish royal family. It was built in the 1750s for Queen Elisabeth Farnese in a wooded deer-park and designed by the Italian architect Virgilio Rabaglio in Italian Baroque style with a strong likeness to the Royal Palace of Madrid. However, the Queen did not end up residing there so many parts remained unfinished. The highlights are the staircase of honour, the chapel and its collection of paintings, and the various lavishly furnished room. There is also a Museum of Hunting with animal trophies.

Access & Transport

The building is located close to the towns of Navas de Riofrío and La Losa, in the southwest of Segovia Province. It is a 10km drive from Segovia (SGV-724 then SGV-7210) and 80km from Madrid. By train, some regional lines stop at 'Navas de Riofrio- La Losa' station, only 3km away from the palace.

Instructions & Recommendations

The Royal Palace of La Granja of San Ildefonso is only 15km away but there is an overlap in the nature of these attractions so we would not recommend visiting both on the same day.

Meta review

The palace is not as well advertised as the nearby La Granja but it does get some good online reviews overall. Comparing it to La Granja, a few travellers found the rooms more interesting thanks to the amount of period furniture in them but the majority thought they were not in the same league, which doesn't mean Riofrio is not worth visiting. The hunting museum with stuffed animals is described as striking and curious.

Environmental & Social

We could not find any environmental or social related information. We deem this attraction marginally negative from an environmental perspective (heating/lighting) though this is compensated by the forest area. Part of the country's architectural and artistic heritage.

Conclusion

The Royal Palace of Riofrío isn't among the most impressive Spanish Royal Residences but for travellers in the vicinity of Segovia (or as a day-trip from Madrid), it is one cultural option to be considered, in particular by those who enjoy aristocratic period furniture.
