Museum of the Great War in Meaux

Rue Lazare Ponticelli, Meaux, Île-de-France

Description

The Museum of the Great War in Meaux (in French: Musée de la Grande Guerre du pays de Meaux) is dedicated to the First World War ("WW1"). It is in Meaux, 50km to the East of Paris, in the department of Seine et Marne - close to two significant battlefields. The building was designed by Christophe Lab. The creation of the museum followed the acquisition of the private collection of Jean-Pierre Verney (an historian specialist of WW1) in 2005 and its objective is to document and share the history of the conflict. Visitors can for instance see various armoured vehicles used during the war and the reconstitution of two enemy trenches separated by a no man's land.

Address: Rue Lazare Ponticelli, 77100 Meaux By public transport from Paris, take Line P in Gare de l'Est until Meaux an then take bus G By car, take the A4 expressway and at exit 2 get on the A140 then D360 towards Meaux. Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest taking the opportunity of being there to visit Meaux, including Saint Stephen Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace. Alternatively, Le Vallee Village outlet mall is only 23km (just south of Disneyland).

Meta review

Excellent reviews for this museum with visitors highlighting the impressive building and spaces, the sheer number of items and engaging reconstructions of battle environments. There are recurring comments that this is the best WW1 Museum they have seen, that it is suitable even for younger children and that it is not crowded. Until a few years back there were complaints about the lack of English content/translation but that sems to have been addressed now.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data but we do not see this activity as having a high environmental impact. Positive from a social perspective as it helps spread culture and document historical events.

Conclusion

This is a museum that will reward those making the journey there and interested in historical events. The various exhibits are well laid-out and executed which makes it one of the very best venues documenting WW1. Our main grief is that it is too focused on recording and sharing facts and not enough on highlighting the tragedy and horror that war really is - which could then be leveraged to pacific ends because war is seldom, if ever, the only and best answer.
