Description
Cheonggyecheon is an urban redevelopment along an 11km water stream flowing west to east from downtown Seoul though to Jungnangcheon, a tributary of the Han River. Completed in 2005, it has been helpful in rejuvenating some neighbourhoods, improving water quality and the local ecosystem. The promenade is open day and night throughout the year.
Access & Transport
Cheonggyecheon Stream starts from Cheonggye Plaza, a 2mins walk from Gwanghwamun (5) and City Hall (1, 2) metro stations. It then runs parallel to lines 1 and 2 for a while. There are also many bus options
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a walk along the promenade in between a visit to Gyeongbok Palace and an exploration of the Insa-Dong neighbourhood.
Environmental & Social
Some positive environmental impact (water quality / ecosystem) and rejuvenation of neighbourhoods + improves quality of life of residents (and office workers)
Conclusion
An enjoyable urban promenade to take a break between a museum or palace visit and perhaps some further urban exploration. Not really an attraction but since it is likely to be on your way (or thereabout) at some stage, it is definitely worth checking out and enjoying this mini water & concrete oasis.
