DMZ tour (Seoul N Tour)

, Noksapyeong-daero 46-gil, Seoul

Description

Seoul N Tour is one of several operators running "DMZ tours" out of Seoul. Those take customers to the Korean Demilitarized Zone, near the 38th parallel north, that serves as a buffer zone between South Korea and North Korea. The program includes a stop at Imjingak with sights such as the Freedom Bridge and the Monument for Soldiers, at the Third Tunnel (1600m long, 73m underground) and at the Dora Observatory overlooking the DMZ (pay binoculars available).

Access & Transport

Each operator has a list of pick-up points in Seoul. At the time of this review, for Seoul N Tour, those were Exit 12 of Gangnam station (2 & Sinbundang), Exit 1 of Itaewon station (6), Exit 9 of Myeongdong station (4), Exit 6 of City Hall station (1, 2), Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. station (2 & Arex), and Intercontinental Seoul COEX. Customers will then be shuttled by bus to the various points of interest.

Instructions & Recommendations

*** Bring your passport and note that the program may change at short notice depending on the geopolitical situation *** There is a morning and an afternoon option. There are several pick up locations in the city so the timing may be slightly different than indicated in the practical info section. Lunch is not included so we advise customers to bring some snacks.

Meta review

This is one of the best rated DMZ tours on online review portals. Customers describe it as being well organized, led by helpful and quite knowledgeable guides with proper command of English, and a bit rushed at times even though you can expect it will be the same for all groups. As for the experience itself, reviewers overall find it to be a unique and interesting way to learn more about the ongoing Korean war and to see North Korea.

Environmental & Social

Limited carbon footprint (bus ride). No social aspect other than being slightly educational

Conclusion

Definitely interesting and something you cannot do independently, but we are somewhat bothered with the whole tourist show around a situation that is very real and deeply problematic; we feel it somehow trivializes it. So, we'll withhold our judgment.

Key positive

Opportunity to learn about the DMZ and relationships with North Korea

Key negative

Early start and some waiting time possible

Suitability

The tour is described as not accessible for wheelchair users and not suitable for pregnant women
