Description
Hongdae (홍대) is a neighbourhood of Seoul known for its artsy and indie music & entertainment scene. The name is derived from Hongik University (Hongik Daehakgyo), one of the best fine arts colleges in the country, which marks the eastern edge of the area. Its rise in popularity started with urban art exhibition from college students and has since extended into fashion and all things designer and creative.
Access & Transport
The neighbourhood is located in Mapo-gu, in the west of Seoul. It is served by Hongik University Station (2, Airport line, GJ line) and Sangsu station (6) at the southern end.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining the exploration of Hongdae in the evening, after a walk in either Haneul Park or Yeouido Park (across the Han River).
Environmental & Social
Very commercially oriented with bright lights and no greenspaces.

Hongdae is exactly what urban explorers would be looking to discover in Seoul; it should also be of interest to shoppers and those looking for night entertainment options. Others will not find much of interest there.
