Insa-Dong, Seoul

Description

Insa-dong is a neighbourhood of Seoul that was historically the largest market for antiques and artwork in Korea. It is characterized by small alleys replete with galleries, restaurants, teahouses, and cafes radiating from Insadong Street where several shopping centres are located.

Access & Transport

The neighbourhood is in the south-eastern part of the Jongno district in central Seoul. Anguk Station (3) is a 5 mins walk north from it and Jonggak Station (1) is essentially at its south-western extremity.

Instructions & Recommendations

Every Saturday from 14:00 to 22:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 22:00, the main street is blocked to vehicular traffic

Meta review

Billed as one of the most interesting neighbourhoods to explore by travel magazines, the opinion from online reviewers is markedly different - not that the comments are negative but they describe a touristy area with plenty of galleries, souvenir shops, and restaurants where one can try local delicacies but they do not highlight any unique aspect or standout attraction. However, there are some visitors who find it to be a good base to stay and prices are reported as being slightly high but not unreasonable.

Environmental & Social

Urban and commercial environment with intense electricity consumption + heavy focus on commercial activities that have been putting pressure on the cost of living for local residents

Conclusion

An excellent area for shoppers and urban explorers: lively, colourful, and plenty of galleries for those looking to buy art and/or souvenirs. Many good restaurant options as well. However, if shopping is not part of your interests, you may want to avoid the place altogether.
