Leeum Museum of Art - by Kim Wee Soh on Google
Description
The Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art displays two collections focused on traditional Korean art and modern & contemporary art. The former collection is housed in a building designed by Mario Botta ('Museum 1') characterized by the reverse cone reaching down to its basement lobby. It contains paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts and utensils such as ceramics and porcelain. 'Museum 2' was designed by Jean Nouvel and features a sunken garden; it houses works by famous international artists such as Warhol, Hirst, Kelin as well as Korean artists.
Access & Transport
The museum is in the Yongsan district, just south of Namsan Park and east of Itaewon-Dong. The Hangangjin subway station (6) is about 300m away.
Instructions & Recommendations
We would not advise a visit to both this museum and the (relatively) nearby National Museum of Korea on the same day as there is some degree of overlap. Geographically, the Namsan Tower (inside Namsan Park) and the War Memorial of Korea are within walking distance.
Environmental & Social
Purposely constructed buildings and no info on sustainability credentials. Spreads the arts
Conclusion
Not the first item on your list in Seoul (that should belong to the city and country specific palaces and museums) but pretty close for art and even architecture enthusiasts. Strongly recommended
Key positive
