Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal

Estrada do Castelo de São Filipe, Setúbal, Setúbal

Description

The Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal was built at the end of the 16th century, on the right bank of the Sado River, overlooking the town of Setubal. It was damaged during the 1755 earthquake and partially destroyed by fire in the 19th century before being completely renovated to be repurposed as a luxury hotel, part of the Pousadas de Portugal chain. Beside rooms, there is a restaurant and an information center.

Access & Transport

The Fort is 1.5km uphill walk or drive from the center of Setubal, and 50km south of Lisbon by car. Onsite parking is limited but there are also some spaces along the way.

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with a drive within Arrábida Natural Park and/or a visit of the town of Setúbal.

This attraction gets excellent online reviews for having some of the best views in the region, taking in the Troia peninsula, the town, and the river. The chapel with its blue decorative tiles is also worth visiting and the café is a great place to sit and enjoy the panorama.
