Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal - by Management
Description
The Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal was built at the end of the 16th century, on the right bank of the Sado River, overlooking the town of Setubal. It was damaged during the 1755 earthquake and partially destroyed by fire in the 19th century before being completely renovated to be repurposed as a luxury hotel, part of the Pousadas de Portugal chain. Beside rooms, there is a restaurant and an information center.
Access & Transport
The Fort is 1.5km uphill walk or drive from the center of Setubal, and 50km south of Lisbon by car. Onsite parking is limited but there are also some spaces along the way.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with a drive within Arrábida Natural Park and/or a visit of the town of Setúbal.
Environmental & Social
Minimum carbon footprint. Part of the region's architectural heritage
Conclusion
The Fort of São Filipe is the perfect place to unwind for an hour or so, enjoying a drink while taking in the sweeping vistas over the Troia Penisula with a dash of culture on the side.
