Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal - by Management

Description
Setubal is a town (and also a district) in the south of Lisbon region, on the northern bank of the Sado River, at the border with the Alentejo region. Historically it was the main center of the country's fishing industry, but the factories have now closed. Highlights include the Municipal gallery, the Praça do Bocage, the former Monastery of Jesus, the São Julião Church, and the Fort of São Filipe.
Access & Transport
The town is 50km south of Lisbon on the A2, exit 5 onto the A12. By public transport from Lisbon, take the ferry across the Tagus to Barreiro and then a 30mins train ride.
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining a visit of Setubal with either the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve or the Arrábida Natural Park.
Environmental & Social
The main attractions in the city have a low carbon footprint. Tourism is a welcome injection of activity and revenues in the local economy
Conclusion
The town of Setubal is worth a stop on a regional road trip, 3h are probably sufficient to take in the main highlights, including a visit to a couple of church or museums. Nothing exceptional but pleasant enough.
