Itálica archaeological site - by Fast Monk on Google
Description
Itálica was founded by Roman general Scipio in 206 BC during the Second Carthaginian War, making it the first such settlement outside of Italy. It was named after its inhabitants, mostly of Italic origin, and may have been the birthplace of emperor Theodosius (late 4th century AD). The settlement was located just 9km northwest of modern-day Seville, in Andalusia. Structural and decorative features include the Theatre, several mosaic floors, an Amphitheatre that would have seated 25,000 spectators, and some statues. Many artefacts have also been transferred to the Seville Archaeological Museum for better protection and preservation.
Access & Transport
Address: Av. Extremadura, 2, 41970 Santiponce, Sevilla Buses 170A & 170B leave from Seville's Plaza de Armas and stop by the site. By car, it is just off the A-8078 and close to the N-630 (take Av. Rocio Vega). Coming from further afield, use the A66 (E-803) and exit 20B coming from Seville or 805 coming from the north.
Instructions & Recommendations
In the summer, best to head there first thing in the morning (it closes at 15h00, so evening won't be possible)
Environmental & Social
No or low carbon footprint. Helps preserve the architectural and historical heritage of the region
Conclusion
The site of Itálica is a recommended visit for anybody travelling to Seville (city or Province) with an interest in archaeology. We think it is complementary rather than overlapping with the Archaeological Museum of Seville.
