Archaeological Museum of Seville

Plaza América, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

*** CLOSED FOR RENOVATION UNTIL 2026 *** The Archaeological Museum of Seville includes collections spanning the Prehistory and Protohistory period in the area of Seville on the ground floor and the Roman Era through to the Early Modern Period on the first floor. The museum is housed in the 'Renaissance Pavilion' designed by architect Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. Many of the Roman artefacts come from the site of Italica, a few kms north of Seville. The highlight of the collections is the Carambolo Treasures (gold jewellery, gold coins and ceramics from the 6th century).

Meta review

PRE-CLOSURE SUMMARY: The museum isn't very well-known but, ignoring the frustrated comments from visitors in 2020-21 who found out too late that it was closed for renovation (it has now re-opened), the online reviews are actually very good. Those point out the mix of large statues and beautiful mosaics, the appropriateness of explanations, and the gorgeous building.

Environmental & Social

Minor environment impact to run the museum (electricity). Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and preserving the archaeological artefacts

Conclusion

The Archaeological Museum is another excellent cultural attraction in Seville and will allow travellers and residents alike to learn and see more about an earlier historical period than the one on display in the center of the city and all its monuments. The near absence of entry fee and attractive venue are additional draws.
