Casa de Pilatos, Sevilla

1 Plaza de Pilatos, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

La Casa de Pilatos (Pilate's House) is the residence of the Dukes of Medinaceli in Seville. This typical Andalusian palace was built in Italian Renaissance style in the late 15th century with further improvements and decorations over the next several decades. Its floor plan consists of a central courtyard decorated with a fountain and two dozen bust sculptures leading into two gardens on opposite sides. The palace is famous for its azulejo (Spanish glazed tile) dating from the 16th century - there are around 150 different designs - and for its Mudéjar honeycomb ceilings. Trivia: the palace appears in several movies, including Lawrence of Arabia in 1962.

Access & Transport

Address: Plaza de Pilatos, Seville The closest public transport options are bus stops 'Menéndez Pelayo (Puerta Carmona)' and Plaza Ponce de Leon, respectively 200m and 500m away.

Instructions & Recommendations

From there, it is a short walk to the Setas de Sevilla, the Museo del Baile Flamenco and all the monuments of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood. The Palacio de las Dueñas is another palace nearby, but we feel it would be a little redundant to visit on the same day.

Meta review

The monument is generally listed among the highlights of the city in travel guides and blogs. Visitors also have excellent reviews overall but point out that it is not on the same level as the Alcazar so that it is better to come here first, or risk being underwhelmed. The highlight is of course the azulejos but travellers also enjoy the quietness of the place, the gardens and the courtyard with its sculptures. The only negative recurring comments relate to price (not a major complaint though) and the audioguide that many find too long and/or not user friendly.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral and visits help maintain the architectural heritage of the city

Conclusion

Not quite royal but definitely 'noble"; the Casa de Pilatos blends an elegant architecture with typically Andalusian decoration and manages to create a self-contained residential oasis in the middle of the city. There are more impressive sights in town of course but this complex does have a lot of charm.

Key positive

Variety and amount of azulejos

Enjoyable architecture and gardens

Key negative

Slightly expensive

Suitability

The website doesn't state anything, but it looks like the ground floor (where most of the visit takes place) is accessible to wheelchair users but the first floor probably not.
