Catedral de Sevilla & La Giralda

Avenida de la Constitución, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

Seville Cathedral was designed in Gothic style and completed in the early 16th century. Its full name is Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See and, with a length of 135m and width of 100m, it is the fourth largest church in the world (it supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest back in the days). Next to it stands the 105m tall La Giralda, the Cathedral's bell tower. The structure started its life as a minaret but was converted after La Reconquista. Highlights include the 15 doors spread across its four facades, including the Door of the Conception (North façade), the sheer numbers of chapels (80 in total), the tombs of Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand III of Castile, the golden ceiling of the main nave; and the choir with wooden stall and the altarpiece by Pierre Dancart.

Access & Transport

The Cathedral is in the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, in between the "Plaza Nueva" and "Archivo de India" tram stop (T1). It is also a short 5mins walk to the Puerta Jerez metro station (M1). Public Parking: Jardines de Murillo; Puerta de Jerez; Mercado del Arenal y Plaza Nueva Access for online ticket holders is through Puerta del Lagarto and the ticket office is at Puerta del Príncipe

Instructions & Recommendations

It is strongly recommended to book a timed ticket online

Meta review

As one of the largest churches in the world, the monument is well featured on the short-list of touristic attractions when visiting Seville. Online reviews are also excellent overall, but visitors seem to like different aspects; for some it is the grandeur and space and for others the staggering amount of things to discover inside with favourites including the funerary monuments and the high altar retable. The ascent to the Giralda is also a definite plus for many although it may be a little tiring. The only drawback, similar to other popular attractions, is the potentially long queues for those who have not booked online beforehand.

Environmental & Social

The ongoing environmental footprint is low, and the ticket fees help maintain the monument which is part of the city's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

The Seville Cathedral is a compulsory stop for any traveller with cultural inclination, it offers a combination of spectacular architecture and museum-like amount of artistic work. There are many arresting churches in Spain but this one arguably "ranks" near the top.

Key positive

Visually stunning

Many impressive artworks

Very centrally located with other top touristic sights nearby

Key negative

Expensive for a religious monument

Often has long waiting line

Suitability

The church is fully accessible for visitors with reduced mobility, but it would be a long way up the ramps of the Giralda tower, even with assistance
