Las Setas de Sevilla

Plaza de la Encarnación, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

The Setas de Sevilla ("Mushrooms of Seville") is a wooden structure consisting of six parasols in the form of giant mushrooms in the city centre of Seville. It was designed by architect Jürgen Mayer and is inspired by the vaults of the Cathedral of Seville and, apparently, by the ficus tree in nearby Pl. de Cristo de Burgos. The Setas, originally named 'Metropol Parasol', are organized over four levels with the Antiquarium museum underground, an open-air public plaza and two stages of panoramic terraces at a height of over 20m. The General Admission ticket provides access to the Viewing Platform and also includes the Immersive Chamber and Aurora Light Show.

Access & Transport

Address: Pl. de la Encarnación Bus stop 'Imagen (Plaza Encarnación)' is next to the square and the "plaza Nueva' tram stop (T1) is 800m to the southwest. Parking "Imagen" is 2mins away on C. Santa Angela de la Cruz.

Instructions & Recommendations

Our understanding is that the ticket allow for a 2nd visit to see the Aurora light show, for those who went to the viewing platform during the day.

Meta review

The Setas are an extremely popular sight and is often featured in travel magazines. Visitors mostly enjoy the look of the structure even though some feel it is out of place in this historical part of the city. As for the experience at the top, it gets good reviews for the views and the unique pictures but there are recurring comments that the overall experience is expensive for what it is.

Environmental & Social

No repurposing here and it was quite a significant (and expensive) construction project. No data available on energy efficiency/intensity. Socially neutral

Conclusion

It is definitely worth making a detour to have a look at this strangely shaped structure when exploring the historical center of Seville. Whether it is worth going up or not really depends on your budget elasticity - the views of the city are good but do not provide a major experience uplift Vs the ground floor view.
