Museum of Fine Arts of Seville

9 Plaza del Museo, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

The Museum of Fine Arts of Seville (Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla) has an extensive collection of mostly Spanish paintings from the 15th to the early 20th century with a focus on the Seville School (15-17th centuries) with works by artists such as Murillo, Valdés Leal, Zurbarán, Velázquez and El Greco. The museum is housed in the former convent of the Order of Mercy (it was expropriated in 1835) and the existing building dates from the mid-17th century although the façade is from the early 18th century.

Access & Transport

Address: 9 Plaza del Museo The closest bus stops (C3, C4, C5, 6, 43, CC, 13, 14, B2, B5) and car park are at Plaza de Armas, 500m to the southwest. For visitors with reduced mobility, there is a ramp at the entrance and a lift serving the 2 floors.

Instructions & Recommendations

For those very keen on arts, the Andalusian Contemporary Art Center is a 15-20mins walk away across the Guadalquivir.

Meta review

The museum is widely considered the foremost art museum in Andalusia and among the very best in the country. Visitors enjoy not only the quality of the artworks and how they are displayed, but also the building and small gardens, and the very cheap entrance fee. The only recuring criticism is that the theme is overwhelmingly religious (Christian), which can be boring after a while.

Environmental & Social

We could find no information around environmental sustainability. Positive from a social perspective by helping spread culture and the arts.

Conclusion

Seville's Museum of Fine Arts is a fantastic cultural venue with top-quality artwork, not too large and affordable to all but, as is the norm with most southern European paintings from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century, the overarching theme is religious. If that's not your cup of tea or you need a break from it, then you may want to give it a miss.
