Palacio de las Dueñas

5 Calle Dueñas, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

The Palacio de las Dueñas (or Palace of the Dukes of Alba) is a palace in Seville belonging to the House of Alba. It was commissioned by the Pineda family in the late 15th century, named after the nearby monastery of Santa María de las Dueñas, and designed in the traditional mix of styles of the time: Renaissance with some Moorish and Gothic influences. It underwent significant renovations in the 18th and 19th centuries. The complex comprises a series of courtyards and buildings with long passageways. The palace is well known for its garden, part of the "Great Gardens of the World", which includes over 110 species and 7,000 specimens. Other highlights include the Chapel and the extensive art collection (over 1,400 items), including tapestries and Italian and Spanish paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Access & Transport

Address: 5 Calle Dueñas It is a short walk to various bus stops: 'Plaza Ponce de León', 'Recaredo (Puerta Osario)' and 'Amor de Dios (Plaza Europa)'. Parking is available around Plaza Ponce de León, 300m away.

Instructions & Recommendations

This activity is easily combined with the Setas de Sevilla and other sights in the Santa Cruz area. There are other palaces worth visiting in the neighbourhood, such as the Casa de Pilatos, but it may be slightly redundant to visit them on the same day.

Meta review

This palace is considered one of the most impressive in the city and online reviews concur with this although visitors tend to enjoy it more for its intimate setting rather than its grandeur. The scale is nothing like the Alcazar indeed and, by far, the favourite feature is the gardens whereas the rooms and decorations only drawing adjectives such as "curious" and "interesting". There are a few recurring comments about the entrance being overpriced, the audio-guide not being particularly useful (and being too long) and the exteriors looking a bit neglected.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally neutral and visits help maintain the architectural heritage of the city

Conclusion

In our opinion, the Palacio de las Dueñas is a great option for travellers on a second visit to the city (or at least 4 days in town) and are at their best in Spring in Summer since the highlights are the gardens.

Key negative

Buildings around are not very attractive

A little expensive

Suitability

It is unclear if wheelchair users can access the first floor but most of the interesting aspects are at ground level
