Parque de María Luisa

Paseo de las Delicias, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

The Parque de María Luisa is Seville's most extensive green space and comprises several monuments, fountains and cultural venues. The grounds were originally part of the Palace of San Telmo and donated to the city (by the Infanta Luisa Fernanda) at the end of the 19th century for use as a public park. The north-eastern section was used to build the Plaza de España and other key features & monuments include the monument to the poet and writer Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, the Fountain of the Lions, the small hexagonal castel of the Queen's sewing box, the Renaissance Pavilion that houses the Archaeological Museum of Seville, and the Mudejar Pavilion that has been turned into the Museum of Arts and Traditions of Sevilla.

Access & Transport

The park is south of the Royal Alcazar and Universidad de Sevilla. The 'Prado de San Sebastián' metro and tram stations (L1, T1) stop 200m from it. There are also bus stops along Av. de la Borbolla and Paseo de las Delicias.

Instructions & Recommendations

The following attractions are in, or at the edge of, the park: the Plaza de España, the Archaeological Museum of Seville, the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions and the Sevilla Aquarium.

Meta review

The park is popular with travellers and residents alike who describe it as a green oasis in the city. Reviewers state that this is a great place for a break away from the crowd and the summer sun. Mixed and conflicting comments about the state of maintenance; the area around the two main museums seems to be the more enjoyable section.

Environmental & Social

We deem this activity to be marginally positive from an environmental standpoint, on account of the green space and trees. Socially positive as it enhances the living environment of residents

Conclusion

Parque de María Luisa makes for a very enjoyable and relaxing break from Seville's urban attractions. It also has several attention-worthy features that makes it a destination in its own right.
