Triana neighbourhood, Seville

Calle Betis, Sevilla, Andalucía

Description

Triana is one of Seville's most distinct neighbourhoods with its own culture. Located between two branches of the Guadalquivir (alongside 'Los Remedios' to the south and 'La Cartuja' to the north, with which is it often associated), this physical separation has had major impact on the historical evolution of this 'arrabal' (~ suburb). Its residents, called 'trianeros' were traditionally artisans (a lot of potters), sailors, construction workers as well as Flamenco singers and bullfighters. Consequently, the neighbourhood has its own take on festivals, including religious ones such as the Holy Week and the 'Velá de Santa Ana' celebrated at the end of July on Betis Street. Triana was also the seat of the Spanish Inquisition created at the end of the 15th century. Highlights include the Puente de Triana, the Chapel of El Carmen designed in Moorish Revival style, Plaza del Altozano, Betis St. (which has many popular bars and restaurants), Inquisition alley and the Church of Santa Ana.

Access & Transport

The neighbourhood is directly across the historical center of Seville, over the Guadalquivir. The 'Plaza de Cuba' and 'Parque de los Principes' metro stations (L1) are on the southern edge of the barrio and there are bus stops across Pagés del Corro street.

Instructions & Recommendations

You can head to Triana after visiting Torre del Oro or the Plaza de Toros. For those looking for a lively evening out, the area around Calle Betis and Calle Pureza is a good option.

Meta review

Triana is systematically advertised as the "authentic" or "most special" neighbourhood of Seville in travel guides, a little less so in online blogs and much less so in online reviews (filtering out the fakes). Indeed, a lot of visitors state having come with high expectations but being underwhelmed and still wondering what the fuss is about. The regularly mentioned highlights are the market, the street life and the Iglesia de Santa Ana.

Environmental & Social

Very urban environment with no green spaces (there is a river though). Not overly commercial, with many independent stores.

Conclusion

Triana certainly has a distinct personality and role in the historical development of Seville but "authentic" simply means less commercialized and generally less crowded with tourists; it doesn't in any way guarantee anything exceptional. In our opinion, it would take many days or even months of living in the city to truly appreciate what makes the area special
