Asian Civilizations Museum - by Marco Mazzola on Google
Description
The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) houses art collections spanning the regions of South Asia, West Asia and Islamic world, Southeast Asia and China. It opened in 1997 and moved to its current location in 2003. The cornerstone collection originally consisted of artefacts from Malay and other indigenous Southeast Asian cultures and has grown from there since the 1990's.
Access & Transport
Located at 1 Empress Place, in between Raffles Place and City Hall MRT stations (both are interchange for the EW and NS lines) - 5mins walk from each. It is even closer past the Fullerton Hotel to the bus stop on Fullerton Rd. Public parking is available at the basement car park of the New Parliament House, at Six Battery Road and at One Fullerton across from the Fullerton Hotel.
Instructions & Recommendations
We recommend combining this museum with a lunch or dinner / drink there or along Boat Quay and a visit of the area which includes the Padang, Boat Quay and Raffles Place. In our oprinion, it is not a good idea to visit more than one of the following museums on a single day: Asian Civilization Museum (Empress Place), the National Gallery and the National Museum of Singapore
Environmental & Social
No environmental data. Some electricity consumption (cooling and lighting). Slightly positive from a social perspective as it helps spread culture and maintain the city's cultural heritage.
Conclusion
The Asian Civilizations Museum is an excellent cultural option, possibly the best, in Singapore. Whilst the size and quality of the collections does not match that of the A-list museums in other countries, it's scope and setting make it a very enjoyable 2-3h activity - sufficiently focused not to be overwhelming. It is not a must-see by any mean because it does not feel unique to Singapore but if you have a couple of spare days it would be a pity not to visit.
