East Coast Park, Singapore

East Coast Park Service Road, Singapore,

Description

East Coast Park is a 10.5km-long park with long stretch of beaches, a footpath and cycling track located on the eastern side of Singapore, between Kallang / Fort Rd and Bedok / Tanah Merah. It was built completely on reclaimed land in the early 1970's and see some regular upgrades / additional developments. Key facilities and "landmarks" include the East Coast Lagoon Food centre (hawkers) next to the namesake lagoon where a popular cable wakeboarding park operates, the East Coast Food Centre with several seafood restaurants, a skatepark, a sailing centre, and a couple of kids playgrounds. Cycling and in-line skating are very popular and one can find several bike rental stores.

Access & Transport

The easiest way to get there is by car / taxi as the 7-8km stretch around the service road has regular parking lots but only one bus service and the closest MRT stations (on the EW line) are about 2km away. It is however quite easy to walk from East Coast Road and use one of the ECP underpasses to connect with the park.

Instructions & Recommendations

The best times to go are early morning and in the evening when the sun sets. It is also possible to go at night as the paths are lit but the surroundings are less enjoyable (besides the lights of the boats moored offshore)

Meta review

It is not known as a tourist attraction but is extremely popular with residents who love coming here to cycle, run or just walk, enjoy some seafood or hawker fare. The main issues highlighted in online reviews relate to water quality (oil tankers are only a few hundred meters away) and the crowd on weekends.

Environmental & Social

Green activity and an attractive area for the neighbouring communities but one should keep in mind the environment and social toll of the construction project in the 1970's.

Conclusion

East Coast Park is one of the few areas in Singapore where one can walk or run for many kms at a stretch with the added bonus of sea views Unless you are a beginner or very casual cyclist it is not an ideal place for the sport though as young children are liable to cross right in front of you at any time. For foreign tourists, we do think it is worth checking out with the knowledge that this is all reclaimed land.
