Former Ford Factory, Singapore

351 Upper Bukit Timah Road, Singapore,

Description

The Former Ford Factory serves as an archive center and exhibition gallery documenting the fall of the island during WW2 and life in Singapore under Japanese rule. The factory was Ford's first vehicle assembly plant in Southeast Asia and was relocated to its current site in 1941. It is the location where British forces surrendered to Japanese forces in Feb. 1942 and, subsequent to that, the plant was taken over by Nissan until the end of the war. It was transferred back to Ford in 1947 and operated until it was shut down in 1980.

Access & Transport

The exact address is 351 Upper Bukit Timah Road. Taxi / car is the easiest way to get there (there is onsite parking) but MRT/Bus is a viable alternative. The museum is located mid-way between Beauty World and Hill view MRT stations (Downtown) and the "Aft Old Jurong Rd" bus stop is only 150m from the entrance and 3 stations away from Beauty Word MRT.

Instructions & Recommendations

The air conditioning can be very strong so we would recommend bringing a long sleeve t-shirt / shawl.

Meta review

The only negative reviews for this museum are from visitors who expected to visit a car factory (!) and those who were not aware of the low temperature and were too cold to enjoy the exhibits. Otherwise, comments are very positive with respect to the content and lay out.

Environmental & Social

Electricity consumption (for cooling and lighting). Positive from a social perspective as a memorial and educational venue

Conclusion

The Former Ford Factory is a fascinating glimpse in a crucial time in the city-state history: visitors will learn both about key events but also living conditions under Japanese occupation during WW2. We think the museum is worth visiting both for foreign travellers and residents - if only it were not so cold...
