Keong Saik rd - dinner & drinks

Keong Saik Road, Singapore,

Description

Keong Saik Road is located in the south-eastern part of Singapore's Chinatown district. It was named after a Straits Chinese businessman and became a prominent red-light district in the 1960's. The whole area has been undergoing gentrification since the 1990's, spurred by the creation of the Bukit Pasoh Conservation Area. This review is for a dinner & drinks in restaurants and bars of the neighbourhood that also include connected streets such as Kreta Ayer, Teck Lim and Jiak Chuan Rd.

Access & Transport

It is a 5-8mins walk to Maxwell (Brown) and Chinatown (Blue, Purple) MRT stations but only 100m to bus stops on New Bridge Rd / Eu Tong Sen St or Neil Rd.

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest getting there at dusk after a visit of Chinatown and one of its various temples. If you plan on using the underground on your way back, do note that most lines close between 23h30 and midnight. Some restaurants are very popular and require advanced booking, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Meta review

This neighbourhood is often featured in blogs and magazines for its trendy restaurants and nightlife.

Environmental & Social

It is an urban and commercial environment with relatively high electricity consumption, in particular at night. A bit negative in terms of community impact because of the heavy focus on commercial activities and late-night entertainment

Conclusion

This small area is, along Duxton Hill and Club Streets, one of the best places to go for dinner in an urban but non-commercial setting. There is a great mix of restaurants (wide range of cuisine: French, Caribbean, Spanish, local, fusion, etc.) and trendy cocktail bars. If you like hip places, then you'll enjoy it.

Key positive

Plenty of different cuisine and bar options

Trendy / happening and some cool shophouses

Key negative

Still a few seedy places around but that is part of the charm (?)

Suitability

Suitable for 16 to 60 years old - not recommended to bring kids unless simply for dinner. Streets and most (but not all) restaurants/bars have suitable access for guests with mobility issues - best to enquire with the venue directly when making a reservation
