Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery

184 Jalan Toa Payoh, Singapore,

Description

Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, also known as Siong Lim Temple, is a Buddhist monastery founded in 1898 on land owned by a wealthy Hokkien merchant. It is located in Toa Payoh, Singapore and comprises three main halls separated by two courtyards as well as a seven-storey pagoda which is a replica of an 800-yr old pagoda in Fuzhou, Fuijian (the Chinese province from where the merchant originated). It was declared a national monument in 1980

Access & Transport

By car, it is close to the Lor. 6 Toa Payoh exit on the PIE. The closest MRT station is Toa Payoh (North South Line), 1.4km away and the closest bus stop is 500m away on Lor. 6 Toa Payoh

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining a visit there with Balestier area across the PIE (there is a pedestrian bridge). Little India is also not far away.

Meta review

The temple is not well known outside of the country and is therefore not overrun by tourists. Reviewers have found it worthwhile visiting for its great architecture and relaxing atmosphere. The only drawback seems to be that there may not be any taxi around on the way back but that should not be an issue if using a local ridesharing app.

Environmental & Social

We deem this attraction neutral from an environmental standpoint. Part of the city's architectural heritage.

Conclusion

The temple is one of the better ones in Singapore and deserves a visit if you are especially keen on this type of sights or have plenty of time in the city and don't mind getting slightly off the beaten track.

Key positive

Key negative

A little hard to get to by public transport

Suitable for all ages but best for children above 10yrs old. There are some stairs, and it is unclear whether there is an alternate path for wheelchair users
