Description
Little India is Singapore's main South Asian ethnic district. It is centred around Serangoon road in a rectangle framed by Bukit Timah rd (south), Jl Besar (east), Balestier rd (north) and Race Course rd (west). Highlights include several temples such as Sri Veeramakaliamman, the Tekka Market, Mustafa Centre and all the jewellery stores and restaurants (North Indian, South India, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi and Pakistani cuisines can all be found).
Access & Transport
There are 2 MRT stations covering the main area: Little India (Downtown and NE lines) near Tekka market and start of Serangoon rd, and Farrer Park (NE) along Serangoon rd. Jalan Besar station (Downtown) is also a good way to access the small lateral lanes on the eastern side of Little India. There are many bus servies along Bukit Timah / Rochor Canal rd and Serangoon rd.
Instructions & Recommendations
Avoid going on a Sunday if possible as it is gets very crowded We would also suggest having your lunch there: so much to choose from and very authentic.
Environmental & Social
Urban environment with few patches of green. The flow of visitors drives the local businesses, mostly small shopkeepers and restaurant owners.
Conclusion
Singapore's Little India neighbourhood is a good place to buy and eat all things South-Asian but we would not think about it as a tourist venue besides some of the temples. Instead, the neighbourhood is best enjoyed by the country's residents when they want a change of scenery, or in some cases when they feel a little nostalgic for the Indian subcontinent.
