National Gallery Singapore

1 Saint Andrew's Road, Singapore,

Description

The National Gallery Singapore is an art museum located in the country's "Civil District", next to the Padang and the Supreme Court. It opened in 2015 and, with over 9,000 items, it houses one of the largest collections of Southeast Asian art, including part of the country's National Collection (managed by the National Heritage Board). It was designed by Studio Milou in partnership with CPG Consultants and combines the Old Supreme Court and City Hall.

Access & Transport

Located at 1 St Andrew's Rd, next to the Padang and only 200m from City Hall MRT interchange (EW and NS lines). The closest bus stops are on North Bridge rd and Stamford rd.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this museum with a lunch or dinner / drink there and a visit of the area which includes the Padang, Esplanade and St Andrew's Cathedral. In our view, it is not a good idea to visit more than one of the following museums on a single day: Asian Civilization Museum (Empress Place), the National Gallery and the National Museum of Singapore

Meta review

Visitors mostly enjoy the Gallery for the great buildings architecture and the various restaurants there. Reviews relating to the art are more mixed with many commenting that there isn't much exciting content and that it is too spread out. There are also recurring comments around service but a significant percentage of instances seem to be staff just doing their job and visitors being at fault.

Environmental & Social

The Gallery has social / community initiatives but we could not find a single reference to environment and sustainability in their annual report. Socially, this activity is positive as it helps preserve the city's cultural heritage and spread the arts.

Conclusion

The Gallery is one of the best cultural venues in the city and is worth visiting for its architecture alone. If you are into art - from the 19th century to the present day - then you have come to the right place but do not expect the collection to be as impressive as you could find in some European museum. For residents, there is no excuse not to go at least once and combine this with a meal in one of the many excellent restaurants there.
