National Museum of Singapore

93 Stamford Road, Singapore,

Description

The National Museum of Singapore is dedicated to the history of Singapore. It was designed in the Renaissance and Neo-Palladian style with two rotundas and recent renovations / extensions include a glass rotunda and atrium. The permanent exhibitions cover various periods of the island, from pre-colonial times to being part of the Malaysian Federation, the Japanese occupation, and its independence as a nation.

Access & Transport

Located at 93 Stamford Road, only 100m from Bras Basah (Circle) and Bencoolen (Downtown) MRT stations. Dhoby Ghaut MRT interchange (NS, NE and Circle lines) is 250m away. There are also bus stops with numerous services on Bras Basah rd / Stamford rd. By car, turn left from Stamford Road onto Fort Canning Road for National Museum’s car park entry/exit.

Instructions & Recommendations

We recommend combining this museum with a visit to Fort Canning and/or a walk along Orchard rd. In our view, it is not a good idea to visit more than one of the following museums on a single day: Asian Civilization Museum (Empress Place), the National Gallery and the National Museum of Singapore

Meta review

Reviewers confirm that this is the best place to learn about Singapore's history, that it does an excellent job with it at a reasonable price, and that the building architecture is also a highlight. There is also a significant number of visitors who are a little underwhelmed by the sole focus on Singapore history, the layout (some term it "illogical") and the excessive reliance on modern interactive exhibits that favours form over substance.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data. Some electricity consumption (cooling and lighting). Slightly positive from a social perspective as it helps spread culture and maintain the city's cultural heritage.

Conclusion

The museum is without doubt one of the best cultural activities in the city and should rank high on the list of those keen to learn more about the background and transformation of the city state. If you are looking for art though, you are on the wrong track.
