Description
The National Orchid Garden is, at its name suggest, dedicated to Orchids with over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids displayed over 3 ha set in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. There are 4 colour zones and several sections such as the VIP Orchid Garden (it is a tradition to name new hybrids after visiting celebrities and dignitaries) and the Coolhouse (for species that can normally only be found in the tropical highlands).
Access & Transport
The closest access is from the Tyersall rd gate - there is a parking but no bus stop there. By public transport it is best to come from Holland rd (stop near Gleneagles hospital) and enter from the Tanglin Gate. If you don't mind the walk, the closest MRT stations are Botanic Garden (Downtown and Circle lines) at the northwest corner and Napier (TE line) near the southwest corner, both about 15' walk away.
Instructions & Recommendations
Please expect waiting times to enter the National Orchid Garden during peak periods We highly recommend combining this visit with the surrounding Botanical Gardens.
Environmental & Social
A very green activity (except for the cool house) The Orchid Garden is part of the city's cultural heritage and an important center of botanical research.
Conclusion
The Orchid Garden is an attraction of the highest quality but, unless you are a Singapore resident or really into flowers / botany, it is debatable whether you are getting much more value in addition to everything one can discover within the Botanic Gardens themselves (for free).
