Night Safari, Singapore

80 Mandai Lake Road, Singapore,

Description

The Night Safari is a zoo in Singapore with over 900 animals from 100+ species such as lions, Asian elephants and Indian rhinoceros. It is only open at night and can be explored by foot or tram - lighting is brighter than a full moon but dim enough so that the animals' nocturnal and crepuscular behaviour is not impacted. Similarly to the Singapore Zoo, natural barriers are used as enclosures rather than cages. There is also a couple of shows involving tribal dances and animal performances.

Access & Transport

The Night Safari is located at 80 Mandai Lake Road (next to the Zoo) and the easiest way to get there is by taxi / car. There are a few bus services that come to the Zoo and link with the Red or Brown MRT lines and some shuttles to town. Please check the following link for more info: https://www.wrs.com.sg/en/night-safari/plan-your-visit/getting-to-night-safari.html

Instructions & Recommendations

You may want to consider several of the animal parks, in which case a multi-park ticket may make sense. We would however advise against trying to visit the Singapore Zoo on the same day as the Night Safari but an afternoon at the River Safari or Bird Paradise followed by an evening at the Night Safari is a good combo.

Meta review

Reviews are very mixed and some of them are obvious "fakes" (same as River Safari). For many visitors who have not been to a real safari this is a very original activity and they enjoy the tram rides; but there is a strong contingent of reviewers who think it is nothing more than a zoo at night and the tram actually doesn't give proper time to see animals so that walking is the better way to explore.

Environmental & Social

Many visitors will point out that animals are being kept in captivity, but the Wildlife Reserves / Mandai Park Holdings group has comprehensive conservation programs and research projects across the globe. More info can be found here: https://www.mandai.com/en/saving-wildlife/care-for-planet.html

Conclusion

The Night Safari tries to market itself as a unique experience, but we'd rather think about it as a variation of the Singapore Zoo. Considering the entrance price, we cannot recommend it over its bigger sibling - but if you have many days in town (incl. residents and return visitors) and you really enjoy zoos then a multi-park ticket probably makes sense.
