Peranakan cooking class by One Kind House

136B Lorong J Telok Kurau, Singapore,

Description

*** Mama Soh retired in April 2024 *** One Kind House offers 3h cooking classes in a traditional house in Singapore's East Coast area; they also sell plants and smart equipment (such as hydroponic units) to enable customers to grow them in urban environments. During the classes helmed by "Mama Soh", customers will pick up leaves and make their own tea and pesto before cooking a three-course meal using "forgotten recipes". Typical dishes include blue pea flower rice, fish with Kedondong Pesto and Chicken Curry.

Access & Transport

The venue is at 136B Lorong J Telok Kurau. Kembangan MRT station (EW line) is 10mins / 850m away and there are bus stops on Changi Rd (750m) and East Coast Rd (850m) within walking distance.

Instructions & Recommendations

Note that the class required a minimum of 4 sign-ups to be confirmed so the host will notify you 2-3 days in advance if the quorum is not achieved. You are also advised to dress for tropical climate, shoes included. Whilst you are in the area you can visit the Joo Chiat neighbourhood.

Meta review

The reviews are almost unanimously excellent: people love the atmosphere, the house and urban garden technology used, explanations about the various plants and, of course, the dishes being cooked. The experience sems to be popular with Singaporeans as well as foreign residents and tourists.

Environmental & Social

Environmentally positive as they promote technology / solutions to grow plants in an urban setting. From a social perspective, we deem this activity to be positive as it provides a livelihood to independent operators and helps preserve traditional cooking / recipes

Conclusion

The cooking class run by One Kind House is really recommended if you have an interest into traditional Peranakan cooking - just do not expect a modern set up with a professional chef but, instead, a familial experience in a traditional house. This adds an enjoyable cultural and social aspect that makes it special.
