Island Cruise - by Spicy Gluten Dr on Google
Description
Singapore Island Cruise operates a ferry hop off/on service to several of the country's outlying Southern Islands, leaving from Marina South Pier to St John's Island first and then onward to Kusu Island and finally back to Marina South Pier (there is also the option to head back directly from St John's Island on weekdays). On weekdays there are 2 or 3 departures daily from the terminal and each Island and this ramps up to 7 departures from the terminal and 5 from the islands on the weekends. Details available here: https://islandcruise.com.sg/ferry-schedule/ St John's Island historically served as a quarantine station but is now mostly used for leisure purpose and has a few rental bungalows built on it (there are still government facilities on the island). There is also a pedestrian bridge to Lazarus Island. Kusu Island (means Turtle Island) is 6km offshore and expanded through reclamation; it houses a temple and a holiday resort.
Access & Transport
The boats leave from 31 Marina Coastal Dr, South Pier. This is right next to the Marina South Pier MRT station (NS line); take exit B. Bus #400 also goes there. Driving is not recommended as there are few parking lot and the larger Marina Bay Cruise Centre is a good 10mins walk away and has expensive parking fares.
Instructions & Recommendations
Best to book in advance on weekends and do not forget to bring sun protection equipment (cap/hat, sunblock, sunglasses). Also, bring plenty of water and snacks might be a good idea.
Environmental & Social
The ferries run on fossil fuel and the island were significantly enlarged through reclamation work... but it is more environment-friendly than taking a flight to a beach in a different country
Conclusion
On paper the cruise is very tempting, but the ferry (comfort and wait) and nice but unspectacular beaches, probably do not warrant trip for foreign tourists. For local residents though, it is a very cost-effective option to mix things up and discover a new place with some sun & beach time and, why not, a picnic with friends or family.
Key positive
Probably the cheapest way to explore Singapore's Southern Islands
Key negative
Infrequent services
Not much to do on the islands
Suitability
Suitable for all ages. The boarding of the boat and access to the island make it a challenging proposition for visitors with reduced mobility
