Singapore Zoo

80 Mandai Lake Road, Singapore,

Description

The Singapore Zoo is one of the most famous zoos in the world thanks to its perfectly executed "open" exhibits concept which consists in using hidden barriers, deep moats and glass. There are over 300 species, including a large colony of orang-utans, lions, tigers, and elephants. Several shows are held daily using a range of animals and there is a large waterplay area for children.

Access & Transport

The Zoo is located at 80 Mandai Lake Road and the easiest way to get there is by taxi / car. There are a few bus services that come to the Zoo and link with the Red or Brown MRT lines and some shuttles to town. Please check the following link for more info: https://www.wrs.com.sg/en/singapore-zoo/plan-your-visit/getting-to-singapore-zoo.html

Instructions & Recommendations

You may want to consider several of the animal parks, in which case a multi-park ticket may make sense. We would however advise against trying to visit another park on the same day as the Singapore Zoo. Make sure to bring sun protection with you (cap/hat, sunglasses, sunblock and some water)

Meta review

One of Singapore most famous attractions for the last 3 decades, the zoo is still regularly featured in various blogs and travel magazines as a must-do when visiting the country. Reviews are overall positive with visitors praising the quality of the infrastructure and the shows but there are many recurring comments that it is increasingly being run commercially with more and more space given to shops / cafes rather than to the animal enclosure and those who have been several times complain about the shows getting a little stale.

Environmental & Social

Many visitors will point out that animals are being kept in captivity, but the Wildlife Reserves / Mandai Park Holdings group has comprehensive conservation programs and research projects across the globe. More info can be found here: https://www.mandai.com/en/saving-wildlife/care-for-planet.html

Conclusion

The Singapore Zoo is still one of the best attractions in the city and forms a fantastic complex alongside the River Safari, Night Safari and (now) the Bird paradise. It makes for an excellent day out, especially with kids - but it may no longer feel as "exceptional" as it once was on a standalone basis and pricing is reaching the upper limit before value starts to become debatable.
