Southern Ridges, Singapore

Vigilante Drive, Singapore,

Description

The Southern Ridges consists of 10km of connected trails in the southern part of Singapore, linking up Kent Ridge Park to Harbour Front through HortPark, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park. Highlights include the crossing of the 274m long Henderson Waves bridge on the Faber trail, the 1.3km Forest Walk on raised metallic walkways, and the Alexandra Arch bridge.

Access & Transport

The western end starts at the top of the steep Vigilant rd, in Kent Ridge Park. It is possible to get close by public transport, but the last leg will involve walking so the easiest is to take a car/taxi - there is a small carpark. The eastern end starts at the Marang Trail, just north of Harbourfront MRT station (Circle and NE lines) and goes straight up to the top of Mount Faber - nice warm up! Most sections of the trail are accessible to wheelchair users but not all (the Marang trail has stairs). There are some substantial gradients at times so best to study the trail map beforehand.

Instructions & Recommendations

Wear proper shoes and bring plenty of water (there is a water point around HortPark). For going there with their own car, our recommendation is to cover half the trail and the retrace (perspective is different the other way so you are not wasting your time) and then do the other half another time, adopting the same tactic by starting from the opposite end.

Meta review

Reviews are all very consistent: this is a great walk with varied views. The only downsides are the lack of water fountains and Singapore's heat!

Environmental & Social

A very green activity and an ideal outdoor option for Singapore residents.

Conclusion

The Southern Ridges is one of the best walks in the city, alongside East Coast Park, Marina Barrage / Garden by the Bay and MacRitchie Reservoir. It blends nature with civil engineering to create an unexpected link across the island southern ridges (!). Not extraordinary by any means but smart and well executed.
