Castle of the Moors, Sintra

Estrada da Pena, Sintra, Lisboa

Description

The Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros) was built in the 8-9th centuries, during the al-Andalus period. The hilltop structure was taken by Christian forces in 1147, shortly after the fall in Lisbon, as part of the ongoing Reconquista on the Iberian Peninsula. The fortifications have a perimeter of about 450m and consist of a double line of defensive walls with frequent towers. Surviving structures also include a small chapel and the water cistern.

Access & Transport

The castle is just outside of the town of Sintra. The road is not open to private vehicles so visitors should either take the bus 434 from the train station or walk the Santa Maria trail, 1.8km from "Info Parques de Sintra". There is parking in town. Sintra is 25km northwest of Lisbon and can be reached in 40mins by train (Rossio station)

Instructions & Recommendations

We suggest combining this activity with either the National Palace of Sintra (near the centre of town) or the Pena Palace.

Meta review

A popular monument in Sintra but generally not considered a must-see like its neighbour (in a completely different genre) the Pena Palace. Online reviewers enjoy walking on the walls and the great views over the valley but also note it is quite steep and may not be appropriate for those afraid of heights.

Environmental & Social

No carbon footprint. Part of the region's architectural and historical heritages

Conclusion

The Castelo dos Mouros is the opportunity to learn more about the al-Andalus period in the Lisbon region but don't expect the ruins to reveal much about medieval lifestyle. Good views and defensive walls but not much else to see; so if you are familiar with this type of monument, you can give it a miss.
