Palace of Queluz

Largo Palácio de Queluz, Queluz, Lisboa

Description

The Palace of Queluz was commissioned in the mid-18th century to serve as a summer retreat for Dom Pedro of Braganza but eventually became a royal residence between 1794 and 1807. Nowadays one wing is used as Portugal's official state guest house for visiting foreign heads of state. The Rococo palace is surrounded by large grounds with formal landscaping. There is a very wide single-storey ceremonial façade, and the western wing is known as the Robillion Pavilion which is notable for its graduated flights of steps and Doric colonnade. Inside, the highlights are the Ballroom, the Hall of Ambassadors, and the Chapel.

Access & Transport

The palace is about 12km northwest of Lisbon, just off the A37 by car and walking distance (1km) from the Queluz-Belas train station (on the Sintra train line from Rossio station in Lisbon)

Instructions & Recommendations

We would suggest visiting the palace as a half-day trip from Lisbon. There is some overlap between this palace and those of Sintra and Mafra.

Meta review

The palace is well known but seems to fall in the gap between Lisbon city centre and Sintra so that it doesn't get the same coverage and nowhere close to the same number of visitors. This means better visit quality but also less budget for the upkeep. The interiors get some good reviews, in particular the furniture and wood flooring, but the real highlight are the expansive gardens.

Environmental & Social

No data available regarding environment and social practices and policies. The gardens are a positive but not the energy consumption required to operate the palace. Helps preserve the city's and country's cultural and architectural heritages

Conclusion

For those who like visiting royal palaces, Queluz is easy to get to, very impressive, and not overcrowded. An easy choice for anybody planning to explore the area around Lisbon. Try to avoid winter so you can also enjoy the gardens.
