Description
The Monserrate Palace was designed primarily in Mudejar-revival style by architect James Knowles for the English merchant Francis Cook in the 1860's. It is located in the hills around the town of Sintra and, like other palaces in the area, it exhibits an eclectic architecture. The park that surrounds the property also adheres to the Romanticism influence and includes a lake, fountains, grottoes as well as a range of plants from various geographies.
Access & Transport
The estate is 4km west of the centre of Sintra. There is a small parking area and bus 435 goes there from the train station. The town is 25km northwest of Lisbon and can be reached in 40mins by train (Rossio station)
