Description
The Pena Palace stands on a hill above the town of Sintra. It was built in the mid-19th century in Romanticist spirit, blending various architectural styles such as Neo-Manueline and Neo-Gothic. Outside, there are Moorish arches, a clock tower, two gateways, and a palatial zone with a cylindric bastion. Indoors, there are some stucco work, tiles (azulejos), and painted walls as befit a royal residence (used during the summer).
Access & Transport
The palace is just outside of the town of Sintra. The road is not open to private vehicles so visitors should either take the bus 434 from the train station or walk the Santa Maria trail. There is parking in town. Sintra is 25km northwest of Lisbon and can be reached in 40mins by train (Rossio station)
Instructions & Recommendations
We suggest combining this activity with either the nearby Castle of the Moors (20mins walk) or Quinta da Regaleira.
Environmental & Social
Marginal carbon footprint on a per-visitor basis. Part of the region's architectural and historical heritages
Conclusion
It is all about the exterior there but those who like colours, shapes and fantasy-like castles will surely enjoy the Pena Palace. It is all about minimizing the nuisance then - for that, avoid the tourist season and walk rather than rely on the bus.
