Sintra National Palace

Rua Rainha Dona Amélia, Sintra, Lisboa

Description

Sintra National Palace is a medieval royal palace with origins dating back to the Moorish Al-Andalus era when it was the base of the regional Taifa of Lisbon. Most of the existing building however was commissioned in the early 15th century under King John I, including the conical chimneys of the kitchen called biforas. Highlights include the 16th century Arab room with azulejos tiling, the Coast of Arms room, and the kitchens.

Access & Transport

The palace is in the centre of Sintra, 600m from the train station. The town is 25km northwest of Lisbon and can be reached in 40mins by train (Rossio station)

Instructions & Recommendations

We would not recommend visiting on the same day as the Palace of Queluz or the Palace of Mafra. In Sintra itself, this attraction can however be combined (without too much overlap) with either the Castle of the Moors or the Quinta da Regaleira

Meta review

This palace is not the best known and ranked in Sintra and online reviewers confirm it is not as impressive and the rooms are less luxurious but still worth a visit. In addition, it is conveniently located (compared to others) and much less crowded. The highlight seems to be the Coat of Arms rooms whilst the garden is described as free to visit but not really interesting.

Environmental & Social

No environmental data. Some electricity consumption, mostly for heating/cooling. Part of the region's architectural and historical heritages.

Conclusion

The National Palace of Sintra would be considered a standout attraction in most regions but there are several other competing alternatives in Sintra itself, some of which are without doubt more spectacular but also much busier. All-in, we think it is worth visiting but not a priority for a first-time visitor to the town and the western part of Lisbon region

Key positive

Visually impressive and long history

Easy to reach and not crowded

Key negative

Lacks furnishing inside

Suitability

The website suggests the palace is only partially accessible for visitors with reduced mobility (many stairs)
